Making its foray into the comic book world, BacktotheFuture.com has commissioned an exclusive retailer variant cover to IDW Publishing's first issue of their upcoming mini-series, Back to the Future: Untold Tales and Alternate Timelines.
Based on a concept by BacktotheFuture.com's Stephen Clark and illustrated by Tek2Graphics' Tony Acosta, the cover pays homage to the late STARLOG writer and Disney Imagineer Bruce Gordon, whose essay "The Other Marty McFly?" appeared in the July 1986 issue (#108).
"Bruce's STARLOG article some 29+ years ago was what originally lured me so profoundly into the Back to the Future universe," states Clark. "Since IDW's new Back to the Future series includes the phrase "Alternate Timelines" in the subtitle, I felt it only appropriate that our cover feature two Marty McFlys as a subtle tribute to Bruce's piece."
"I've always been intrigued by the thought that there were two Marty McFlys in both mall parking lot scenes," Clark continues. "We intentionally did not identify the cover's action as taking place at 'Twin Pines Mall' or "Lone Pine Mall' so readers can draw their own theories and conclusions."
BacktotheFuture.com's exclusive variant cover for Issue #1 will be available for purchase in our booth at next month's We're Going Back fan extravaganza, where Back to the Future fans can visit original set locations, meet various Back to the Future cast, attend special screenings of new documentaries, and much more.
"This is the true magic of We're Going Back — it almost feels like you're in the movies," explains event producer Ken Kapalowski. "Being there where magic was made 30 years ago, witnessing once-in-a-lifetime scene recreations, and getting access to products like this — experiencing it all with other fans from around the world really takes fandom to the next level."
